Gravelly, basalt, clay, or serpentine soil, chaparral, grasslands, slopes, open woodlands. Flowering May to Jul. 0 to 2500 m. BR, Casc, Col, CR, ECas, Lava, Sisk, WV. CA, ID, WA. Native. Variety hendersonii is interpreted as the northern phase of Cryptantha intermedia, with generally fewer nutlets per flower (typically one or two), surfaces usually densely papillate and scattered low-tuberculate, and the attachment scar usually abutted the entire length.
