Castilleja uliginosa is a perennial herb (hemiparasitic) that is native to California.
California Rare Plant Rank: 1A (presumed extinct).
State of California status: Endangered.
The current “known range” of Castilleja uliginosa: —three flower pots—makes it probably the rarest of all living Californian plants. One other Californian plant, Franciscan manzanita, is now known only in cultivation but is more widely grown. Like other Castilleja species, C. uliginosa is hemiparasitic and may be difficult to grow extensively in cultivation without the skilled attention of the expert staff at the UC Botanical Garden. C. uliginosa remains listed by the State of California as a recognized endangered species....Paradoxically, current laws provide stronger protection against reintroducing endangered species into habitat where they might not survive than they do against preventing their loss from such places in the first place.
